Shakespeare Introduction to Angling Event – Packington Fisheries
April 30, 2012
Shakespeare Introduction to Angling event – Packington Fisheries
We have just completed our first Introduction to Angling event at Packington fisheries.
The event was a great success and we had 28 adults and juniors attend on Saturday.
This great fishery situated on the Packington estate between Coventry and Birmingham, provided the perfect venue for these complete beginners to learn the basics of both Coarse and fly fishing.
Fosters Mobile - Now Available to All!
With our mobile application having created a huge buzz in the angling press, and downloads surpassing 3,000 recently we are now proud to announce the release of a mobile optimised website. Developed by First4apps who also produced our mobile applications, the website offers all the advantages and features of the app on any mobile device. All you have to do is visit the website via your mobile browser and you will be offered the option of using the mobile or desktop site.
The biggest UK carp of the year so far has been landed recently by Shimano Normarks’s Richard Griffiths at a massive 53lb 8oz. ‘Griff’ worked in our store for many years, and caught the beast from The Avenue fishery on a pop up bait over spodded maggots, along with fish of 30lb 4oz and 28lb 12oz.
This coming weekend also sees the Sensas Challenge final to be fished on the Gloucester Canal. The best match fishing teams in the country, along with the legendary Sensas Team 28 visiting from France will take part in what promises to be an interesting contest – hopefully there will be a few fish caught in all areas, although the venue has a reputation for being difficult yet ultimately rewarding.

Spring Has Finally Sprung - Epic!
Hopefully, it seems that spring is finally upon us and the fish have started to feed again in earnest. This time of year is always something we look forward to in the shop, when a lot of anglers come out from hibernation and start looking to upgrade their gear in preparation for the big weights!
Unfortunately, this also means that there are only two weeks left to get some ‘proper’ fishing done on rivers – which should be (fingers crossed) be in fine form! After reading this article on Pole Fishing Magazine’s website, it seems that maybe more anglers need to fish on rivers to save the resident populations of fish. The good work done over the past 20 years to clean up our nations waterways seems to have had an adverse effect on the zooplankton that juvenile fish rely on for food, meaning that a lot of the population are literally starving. Maybe if a lot of anglers went on the rivers and fed 4 pints of bait each week the fish may thrive once again?
This week also sees the much anticipated release of Wychwood’s aptly named Epic Remote Alarm System. From what we have seen, they will be massive sellers – and their Five Year guarantee tells you the quality and thought that has gone into designing these bad boys! They will be in stock from Friday onwards – make sure that you check them out.
Our app is still marching on, passing 2,300 downloads for both iTunes

We are absolutely delighted with the feedback we have received from both our customers and the angling press – and we are positive that we absolutely made the right decision investing in this new piece of technology. Our mobile website that will allow easy, optimised viewing on all mobile devices including Blackberry and Symbian, is entering its final stages of development and testing and will be released shortly.
As always, if you have any news or views about anything in angling let us know via our Facebook

World Champ Decamp and It’s Snow Joke
The name of Alan Scotthorne is probably the biggest name in match fishing, not just in the UK but in Mainland Europe as well. From Barnsley to Bratislava, ‘Big Al’ is the man people want to see on the bank, in the magazines and especially in those inevitable Facebook pictures that appear after every international competition, with the great man himself giving the thumbs up while next to an avid fishing fan! The news that he has decided to end his consultancy role with Shimano has come as a surprise to many, especially a partnership that has produced some brilliant items of tackle and four individual world gold medals over the past 12 years. All we know for sure is whichever manufacturer secures his services next will have tons of knowledge and experience to call on when designing their products, and will undoubtedly experience a surge in sales as anglers across Europe look to emulate the five times world champion on the bank.
The wintry Arctic blast put paid to a host of matches over the weekend, not least the CIPS rules league round at Woodlands View – the unavailability of bloodworm and joker due to the big freeze in Eastern Europe meant many teams were unwilling to fish, but some quarters have questioned if that really is good enough reason to not fish a big match on one of the best commercial venues in the country? Lots of river matches also suffered from the cold floodwater and were cancelled, which was probably for the best!

Cold Snap, Radio Crackle and Angling Pop Culture
So here we are, at the end of the first month of the New Year already! The big talking points in the angling world this week have been the Arctic weather conditions and the suggestion of more minority sports coverage on the BBC.
At least the cold snap seems to have stimulated some predator action, with two big Pike captures over the past few days. It certainly hasn’t done much for the match results, with weights well down this past weekend compared to recent weeks. We can’t really complain about the sub zero temperatures, as the winter has been relatively balmy compared to both 2009 and 2010!
Although by most measures angling is not a minority sport, it has certainly suffered from a distinct lack of exposure both in national press and on television – especially compared with the likes of golf and darts. Obviously angling lacks the big prize money offered by these sports, but can offer just as much excitement and relevance if presented in the right format. We would welcome any exposure on the BBC – or any other broadcaster for that matter! – As long as it is done properly. Otherwise, it may just serve to further drive a wedge between the angling fraternity and a whole new target audience.
What do you think? Let us know, on Facebook or Twitter.
On the product front, we have this week received our first batch of Rive’s new ‘Open’ D36 stations: sure to be in demand and a big seller this year, especially amongst those who have a need to look the best on the bank! Daiwa’s much lauded and iconic Infinity Carbon Throwing Sticks have also arrived and are sure to move through quickly. New stock is arriving daily from all the major manufacturers – give us a call if there is anything you want to know about.
There will definitely be more app news as the week goes on, we are into the very final stages of testing and the release is imminent - make sure you stay in touch so you don’t miss out.
